It was 2008, we met in college; we both attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. We were familiar with each other because we are both apart of Greek Organizations. Eugene is a member of Omega Psi Phi. Vecoya is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. However, our first true interaction was in Business Finance class. Now, it is hilarious seeing the Facebook messages we sent to each other low key flirting! (Guess that just proves we’ve always been attracted to each other)
In 2010, we both relocated to Washington, DC. We would see each other at parties and events and would always speak but kept it moving. In 2012, we briefly dated but it was short lived. Finally, on Memorial Day weekend 2015, we saw each other at a day party on H Street and the connection was undeniable. We went on a date the following week and have been inseparable ever since!
How Did You Know He Was the One?
I knew he was the one early into us dating because when we are around each other nothing else matters. One Saturday we were chilling at his house, we ate breakfast that morning then sat and talked at his kitchen table for hours! We joked about guessing what time it was, (I didn’t have my phone near and the clock on his oven was broken). It turns out it was 2 o’clock in the afternoon. We were able to talk without a TV or phone to distract us for all that time. Furthermore, I wasn’t even concerned about anything else but our conversation. I knew then that this was different and special!
How He Asked
The weekend before the proposal, Eugene told me to reserve Friday night for our date night. He said we were going to a play by one of our favorite date spots the Washington Monument. We had a great date at the monument last summer, we went for hibachi (my fav) and then we walked around the monuments and talked for hours. It was one of those perfect nights that you want to relive.
So our date night finally arrives. When we get to the monument there isn’t a play in sight. Vecoya started asking a bunch of questions like ‘Eugene what time is the play? Are we late? Is it inside the monument? Where exactly is this play that you speak of?’
We walk towards the monument and start touching the wall, which was very WEIRD. At that moment, I had the strangest feeling overcome me as if something was about to happen. As soon as I look up, I see his good friend come around the corner with a camera and our family and friends appear out of nowhere. He asked to me to spend the rest of our lives together and if I would be his wife, I replied ‘Of course, I will’ as cheesy as it sounds and everyone there burst into laughter and cheers.
Our wedding date is July 8, 2017 in Fort Washington, Maryland.
We’re most looking forward to starting a family and growing old together. We’re very excited about the future!
