black couples in love
How We Met:
We are both from New York City, but met freshman year in college at Temple University in Philadelphia. A mutual friend introduced us in front of the campus library. We were completely platonic friends for 10 years before we got together.
How did you know he/she was the one?
We were always really good friends, even throughout our separate relationships in college and after. When we got together it was definitely divine timing. We lost contact for a year or two and bumped into each other at a BBQ in Harlem and it just felt different. It felt right. We went on our first unofficial date, more of a catch-up, and we couldn’t get enough of each other since then. We realized immediately that our bond was something really unique and special, and pursued it further and shortly after realized the perfect partner was right in front of us the whole time.
How He Asked:
I had no clue that he was going to propose to me. If you would’ve asked me before I would’ve guessed that it would happen in another year or two. He tricked me! I thought that we were going on a simple vacation and that he had to do a write up and lifestyle photo shoot for the resort for his travel blog (Soul Society 101 https://www.instagram.com/soulsociety/). We get to the resort and we stayed in an amazing ocean view villa with a wrap-around garden and pathway to the beach. We sat in awe for about an hour at how beautiful everything was.
Fast forward to the following day, Rondel scheduled an in-room couple’s message hours before our photo shoot. The photographer took our photos in the garden, by the restaurant, around the pool, and ended on the beach in perfect timing sunset. He decided to do some solo photos of the two of us and he instructed me to look at the sunset as if I was “looking towards my future.” After about 30 seconds, Rondel called my name and I turned around. I looked down and there was Rondel on bended knee with a ring in his hand. I blurted out “Rondel, is this a prop for the shoot?” His lips started moving but I went deaf.
I cried and ran into the water. I had so many emotions come over me, that I felt like I didn’t know what was going on. I eventually ran back to him and screamed “YES!
We ended with a private dinner on the beach as the sun was setting. It was perfect. Everything about the proposal was perfect. I’m still floating.
We just got married on October 23, 2016 at Greenpoint Loft in Brooklyn. It’s a very raw, industrial space so we had our work cut out to beautify the space, but it was also amazing because every single detail of the space had our touch. So it felt 100% like our wedding. The theme was a New York Love Story since we’re both super hard core New Yorkers, and the space really represented that. Not to mention it is on the waterfront in Brooklyn, so on the rooftop you got an amazing view of Manhattan And since we both have Caribbean backgrounds, that was infused in everything from the music, to the food, to some other special details.
We are looking forward to our bond growing, having the unconditional support, and making new amazing memories with each other and our families and friends.
